DESCRIPTION:
Portrait of Lamoraal I van Gavere, Count of Egmont was a general and statesman in the Seventeen Provinces just before the start of the Eighty Years' War (Dutch Revolt). In 1568, at Alva's instigation, he and Horne were charged with "treason" and sentenced to death. Both were publicly executed by beheading on the Grand Place in Brussels.
