DESCRIPTION:
The antique print "Cupid Punished" is a remarkable piece of art that originated from a series of twelve plates engraved by Nicolas Dorigny after a fresco by Raphael which can be found in Villa Farnesina. The Villa Farnesina is a Renaissance suburban villa in the Via della Lungara, in the district of Trastevere in Rome, central Italy. The print was first published in 1693. It is a fine example of Renaissance art. On the engraving there is an inscription in Latin, which translates as "Cupid prepares for punishment for the sins of his mother Venus". The print's genre is classical mythology and features the Roman god Cupid, whom prepares for punishment for the sins of his mother Venus. Sir Nicolas Dorigny was a highly skilled engraver. Dorigny's engravings have placed him amongst the finest masters of the art of engraving. Notable for their ease of style combined with precision of execution, Dorigny's engravings impress with their simultaneous use of both burin and needle, giving them the appearance of pencil drawings.
