DESCRIPTION:
Decorative map of Scandinavia from 1762. Covers from Iceland and England east to Moscow, north to the Arctic Ocean and south to Denmark and Germany. Includes the modern nations of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. Identifies cities, rivers, mountains and some underwater features. Of particular interest is the legendary Lofoten Maelstrom in northwestern Norway. This legendary whirlpool was the inspiration for Edgar Allan Poe's classic story "A Descent into the Maelstrom". In reality, it is a periodic and powerful current caused by tidal variations in the region. A large decorative title cartouche appears in the upper left quadrant. Titled "Les Couronnes du Nord Comprenant Les Royaumes de Suede Danemarck et Norwege divisees par Provinces et Gouvernements", published in Paris. Framed.
