DESCRIPTION:
Ancient temple invented and designed in the manner of those built in honor of the goddess Vesta: therefore we see in the middle the great altar, above which the inextinguishable sacred fire was kept by the Vestal Virgins. The whole work is Corinthian adorned with statues and bas-reliefs, and still other ornaments. The floor of this Temple is notably raised from the ground: the round Cella can be seen in the middle, as is also the whole great Vase of the Temple itself: four loggias led to it, and one ascended it by as many stairs. The walls of the great Temple have two orders, above the second a vast dome curves with foundations and rosettes, and ends in a large opening, the light of the cell below depends on this. An engraving by Giovanni Battista Piranesi from "The first part of architectural and perspective engraved drawings" ("Prima parte di architetture, e prospettive inventate, ed incise da Giovanni Battista Piranesi architetto Veneziano fra gli Arcadi Salcindio Tiseio") was first published in 1743.
