DESCRIPTION:
This is an original finely engraved color map of the county of Devon, then known as Devonshire, created by Thomas Kitchen for the 1769 edition of "England Displayed" in England.
Devonshire, or the county of Devon, is located in the southwest of England and is famous for its beautiful nature and coastline. Kitchin's map showed towns, settlements, rivers, roads, hills and other features of the Devonshire landscape. The map represented a region at a known scale and could be used for navigation, travel, or simply to study geography.
Thomas Kitchin (1718-1784) was a famous English engraver, cartographer and geographer of the 18th century. He created many maps and atlases covering various regions of the world, including England and Wales. Kitchin worked in partnership with other cartographers such as Emanuel Bowley and Andrew Millar. He also carried out orders from various publishers of maps and atlases of his time.
