Original engraving by Worthington Whittredge created "The Rocky Mountains" in 1871. The scene shows the ford on the Platte, essentially at Denver, with an Indian settlement along the banks of the river and the Rockies in the distance. No evidence of Denver or any other gold rush impact is seen, for Whittredge was interested in a natural western scene, not in the changes being wrought by the flood of Americans from the east.
Worthington Whittredge (1820-1910) was an American landscape painter known for his contributions to the Hudson River School of painting. He was born in Ohio and later studied art in Cincinnati and Düsseldorf, Germany, where he was influenced by the Düsseldorf school of painting.
Whittredge's paintings often depicted serene and idyllic landscapes, capturing the beauty of the American wilderness. He was particularly skilled at portraying the play of light and atmosphere in his compositions, creating scenes that evoke a sense of tranquility and contemplation.
