DESCRIPTION:
Portrait of Michiel de Ruyter - Admiral of the Dutch Navy. One of his country's greatest admirals. His brilliant naval victories in the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch wars enabled the United Provinces to maintain a balance of power with England. Died on 29 April 1676, after the Battle at Sicily (Battle of the Etna), burried on 18 March 1677 in the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) in Amsterdam.
