Charles-Irénée Castel de Saint-Pierre, known as the abbot of Saint-Pierre, was a French writer, academic and diplomat, born in Saint-Pierre-Église (department of La Manche) and died in Paris. He was the forerunner of the philosophy of lights. He was a member of the French Academy although he was subsequently excluded from it.
