Engraving by Mizuno Toshikata, 1894. Japanese painting in the ukiyo-e genre during the period of the Japanese-Chinese war, when it again gained its lost former popularity and, as it were, in parallel, we will get acquainted with the pictorial art of Japan during the life of Admiral Togo. Then one of the brightest representatives of the military direction of ukiyo-e was the artist Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908), who painted triptychs with illustrations of military scenes. This painting depicts Lieutenant Commander Sakamoto aboard the battleship Akagi.
